The Pentagon has urged American lawmakers to expedite the modernization of the nuclear triad, a strategic initiative aimed at countering the growing military capabilities of China and Russia. «The most important message I want to convey today is that the forces under my command are prepared to deter our adversaries and respond decisively should deterrence fail,» stated Cotton. He articulated a shifting landscape characterized not by a single nuclear adversary but by the dual challenges posed by both the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China. Additionally, he noted the potential complications introduced by North Korea’s missile developments and Iran’s nuclear ambitions, as well as the increasingly intertwined relationships among these nations.
Cotton specifically pointed to the rapid advancements in China’s intercontinental ballistic missile capabilities and expressed concerns regarding projections that could see China possessing around 1,000 nuclear warheads by the end of the decade. He also referenced President Vladimir Putin’s recent claims of modernization of 95% of Russia’s strategic nuclear forces, underscoring a concerning trajectory for U.S. defenses. According to Cotton, «In summary, our competitors are enhancing their positions against the United States and its allies in ways that significantly outpace our own developments from just a few years ago.»
