U.S. Secretary of State Considers Policy Shift Regarding Israel Amid Humanitarian Crisis

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced that Washington is contemplating changes to its policy toward Israel in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the increasing civilian casualties in Gaza, where Israeli operations against Hamas continue unabated.

Following a phone call between U.S. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Blinken expressed deep concern and condemned the attack on a humanitarian convoy operated by the World Central Kitchen organization.

The U.S. official emphasized that Washington expects Israel to adopt new measures to protect civilians in Gaza; otherwise, a shift in American support may be on the horizon.

Blinken’s statement marks a significant development, indicating that the Biden administration is losing patience with the Israeli government’s actions amid escalating humanitarian tragedies. This comes in the wake of a tragic incident in which an attack on the WCK humanitarian convoy claimed the lives of seven aid workers from various countries, including three British citizens. Israel attributed the incident to «erroneous identification» of a Hamas militant.

The potential shift in U.S. policy could reshape the dynamics of the relationship between Washington and Jerusalem, particularly at a time when international scrutiny and pressure are mounting over Israel’s military tactics and their impact on civilian populations. As the situation evolves, the Biden administration is faced with the challenge of balancing its support for Israel with its commitment to humanitarian principles.
