Kyiv City Council Establishes Veteran Assistance Commission

The Kyiv City Council has officially approved the formation of a commission aimed at interviewing candidates for the role of veteran assistants within the transition from military service to civilian life. This initiative was announced by Ruslan Svetlyi, the Director of the Department of Social and Veteran Policy of the Kyiv City State Administration.

Support for Our Defenders

«Our defenders experience profoundly traumatic events during combat operations. Therefore, it is our responsibility today to support veterans and create optimal conditions for their successful integration into civilian life, helping them maintain self-belief and avoid becoming a ‘lost generation,'» emphasized Ruslan Svetlyi. He highlighted that the introduction of the veteran assistant role should serve as a vital tool in this support effort.

Candidate Evaluation Criteria

The council laid out criteria for evaluating candidates for the veteran assistant position. These include:

  • Experience in interpersonal roles and familiarity with normative and procedural documents;
  • Motivation and long-term commitment to the role of veteran assistant;
  • Communication and organizational skills;
  • Personal qualities and an understanding of the social role of a veteran assistant, including levels of empathy, resilience to stress, and readiness for community service.

Already in Action

It’s important to note that veteran assistant services are already operational in several pilot regions, showcasing the proactive steps being taken to address the needs of veterans.

This newly established commission aims to enhance support systems for veterans, paving the way for a smoother transition back into civilian life. The Kyiv City Council is dedicated to ensuring that those who have served their country receive the guidance and assistance they need to reintegrate successfully into society.
