A Stolen Titian Masterpiece Found
A stolen Titian painting «Rest on the Flight into Egypt,» which was stolen twice — in 1809 and 1995, has been found in a plastic bag at a bus stop in London. Christie’s plans to auction it in July.
Rich History of the Painting
According to The Guardian, this painting first appeared in the collection of a Venetian merchant in the 17th century. Over the centuries, it has been owned by various aristocrats and emperors throughout Europe.
Upcoming Auction
In 1878, the canvas was purchased by the fourth Marquess of Bath at a Christie’s auction, and now the same auction house plans to sell it again in London on July 2. The painting is expected to fetch between 15 to 25 million pounds.

The painting «Rest on the Flight into Egypt» was created by Titian in 1508 when he was only 20 years old. The canvas depicts Joseph and the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus.
