Changes in Venice’s Tourism Regulations
From now on, guides are prohibited from using loudspeakers on the streets of Venice, and the size of tourist groups is limited to 25 people. These measures are being implemented by local authorities to reduce the impact of excessive tourism on the city.
Excessive tourism has become one of the main problems in Venice. The city’s population is about 250,000, and in 2019, over 13 million tourists visited the city. Although the number of visitors has decreased due to the pandemic, it is expected that this figure will start to rise rapidly again.
According to the civic organization Osio, which monitors the housing stock in Venice, there are about 49,000 bed spaces for tourists in the historic quarter, exceeding the number of spaces for residents in the city.
Earlier, a tourist tax was introduced in Venice. Starting from April, visitors must pay 5 euros for entry if they do not stay overnight.
