Researchers discover giant-eyed marine worm

Scientists have recently found a marine worm with eyes that are 20 times heavier than its head, near the Italian island of Ponza. These huge eyes not only give the worm sharp vision akin to mammals, but also potentially serve for communication in the deep sea.

Evolutionary marvel

The worm’s oversized eyes are so massive that if humans had eyes in the same proportion, our heads would have to support an extra 100 kg. Researchers are now delving into how this creature’s nervous system can handle such intricate tasks, all while its transparent body suggests that the advantages of having eyes outweigh the risks of attracting predators.
