The Ministry of Health of Ukraine Proposes Establishment of University Hospital in Kharkiv

The Ministry of Health of Ukraine has proposed the establishment of a university hospital in Kharkiv by transferring the management of 9 local institutes from the National Academy of Medical Sciences to the Ministry of Health. The institutes included in this proposal are:

  • Institute of Dermatology and Venereology;
  • Institute of General and Emergency Surgery named after Zaytsev;
  • Institute of Medical Radiology and Oncology named after Grygoriev;
  • Institute of Microbiology and Immunology named after Mechnikov;
  • Institute of Neurology, Psychiatry and Narcology;
  • Institute of Child and Adolescent Health;
  • Institute of Pathology of the Spine and Joints named after Professor Sitenko;
  • Institute of Endocrine Pathology named after Danylevsky;
  • National Institute of Therapy named after Malaya.

On April 12, a meeting of the labor collective was held at the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology named after Mechnikov to discuss the Ministry of Health’s proposal. The institute is concerned that the implementation of this plan will result in a lack of funding for scientific research. While the Ministry of Health argues that the university hospital will receive funds for providing medical services within the state guarantees for medical services, the Mechnikov Institute fears this will lead to the «complete destruction of medical science in the region» as the funding does not cover scientific research.
