Italy Plans to Build World’s Longest Suspension Bridge
Italy is preparing to implement an ambitious plan to build the world’s longest suspension bridge across the Strait of Messina, connecting the mainland part of the country with the island of Sicily.
The bridge, with a length of about 3300 meters, will soar over the strait between Calabria and Messina, a city on the island of Sicily. This structure will surpass the current record holder in length — the Çanakkale Bridge in Turkey, which is 2023 meters long.
However, scientists and experts express doubts about the implementation of this project. The idea of connecting Italy and Sicily through the Strait of Messina has been discussed since ancient times, but none of the previous plans have ever been realized.
Despite the challenges faced by the project, Italian authorities are determined to carry out their «millennial plan.» Italy’s Minister of Infrastructure, Matteo Salvini, has confirmed that the bridge construction will continue, despite doubts and risks.
