Polish Farmers to Strike and Block Border Crossings with Ukraine

Polish farmers have announced a mass strike starting on February 9th, with plans to expand it to several border crossing points with Ukraine. The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine warns that starting from 9th of February at 10:00 Kyiv time, farmers will block traffic on sections bordering the Ukrainian checkpoints «Yagodyn», «Shehyni», and «Rava-Ruska». At the first two checkpoints, they plan to allow one truck per hour in both directions, and at «Hreben — Rava-Ruska» — two trucks per hour during daylight hours.

Details of the Strike

The next stage of the strike is scheduled for February 12th, when traffic for trucks through the «Ustyluh» and «Uhriniv» checkpoints will be complicated. Passenger vehicles and buses will still be allowed to pass, while trucks weighing up to 7.5 tons are planned to pass three per hour in each direction.

Protest Against EU Import Policy

Ukrainian border guards have also received information about a planned protest action at the border on the road to the «Zahon» checkpoint from their Hungarian colleagues. However, they do not plan to block traffic in advance. Farmers are protesting against the EU policy that allows the import of agricultural products into the European Union, believing that both the previous and current authorities are passive.
